As women, we are inundated with messages that we are not beautiful enough just the way we are. We must pluck, dye, lose weight, wax, exfoliate, tone, manicure, highlight, paint, flatten, inject, and dress in haute couture to be “beautiful.” Well, I’m here to say, on behalf of women everywhere- bullshit. Leila Radan is someone who, when you meet her, you’re unlikely to ever forget her. I first met Leila when she came to audition for a show I was producing. As I went to call her in from the waiting area, I was immediately sucked into a dramatic story she was telling another auditioner of walking alone in Dubai without a male escort and getting solicited by an Arab man for her “services” then proceeding to curse him out and beat on his vehicle, upon which he quickly did a U-turn and sped away in utter humiliation. New York Designer Sheena Matheiken came up with this bold, and might I say admirable, idea to raise funds for the Akanksha Foundation in India. founder Zem Joaquin talks to “Green T” aka Tamara Henry at the recent Opportunity Green Conference in LA about a few of the hottest eco-clothing, shoe and lifestyle product designers. The fashion industry, second to agriculture, is one of the most polluting industries for the planet. The amounts of toxins that go into the production of cotton or denim are enormous.
Featured Designer of the Month – A Lot to Say was just named the most environmentally progressive line of message apparel and lifestyle products on the market in the U.S. today. Not only does A Lot To Say have a huge collection of very hip empowering and inspiring messages on their tees, but incredibly, every A Lot To Say tee is now made entirely of RECYCLED BOTTLES, and (they claim) the fabrics are softer than silk!
We are reuniting at this time in order to understand and help one another articulate to those around us what is happening inside of us. While we are each in varying states of reverence, grief, bliss, silence, and speech clearer than we’ve ever spoken, we need to be advocates for one another, drawing one another out with touch, with beauty, with the quiet companionship of the silence of Knowing but no longer alone.
