True Expression

True Colors TV presents Express Yourself! 2013

The Story and Vision

Four years ago I was feeling stuck and bored with the routine of my life. I desperately wanted to discover something I was passionate about and so I decided to interview women who were creating more authentic, fulfilling, creative lives for themselves. The past four years have been a life class in creativity for me. I’ve interviewed numerous artists, experimented with various artforms and ultimately realized that I have a passion for dance and filming people’s stories of transformation. Today my life looks nothing like it did four years ago. I’ve embraced my inner artist, am immersed in a number of creative endeavors and generally apply my creativity to all areas of my life. I love my life! My only problem is finding enough hours in the day to do all that I want to do!

About a year ago, I began to envision an event where I brought some of these amazing performers together to perform and speak about their, not often easy, artistic journeys. I really wanted the audience to experience the inspiration, excitement and freedom I felt when in the presence of these artists; to realize that we all have that seed of creative genius potential inside us and that, as Picasso once said, “We are all artists, we just forgot.” I want this for you!

Welcome to Express Yourself! 2013!

That time has come! This event will feature 6 incredible performance artists who will perform and then tell their stories of having gone from lives that weren’t true for them to lives they only dreamed of! The part I’m super excited about is that after each artist performs and speaks, she will engage with you, the audience, in a creativity exercise to help give you a taste of the emotional freedom and state of mind necessary to access your own inherent wellspring of creativity. It’s there. It just needs a little attention and a lot of self acceptance.

  • Movement and flow are two themes that dominate Alexia’s life. She has traveled all around the world and attests to the fact that dance is a universally powerful tool of expression. She describes her dancing as the ultimate metaphor for her life: ceaselessly in motion, striving to be authentic in every moment and eliminating what no longer feels true—whether it’s a job, a relationship, or a city. Singer, songwriter and pianist Adey “Adey Belle” Garner

By TCTV Founder Rosalyn Fay

It’s not often you meet a native Montanan in California—so when my family and I met Adey Garner at Cafe Gratitude in Berkeley—I felt an instant kinship with her. “Get out!” she exclaimed as she slapped the table and twirled around. “I’m from Kalispell!” Our mutual excitement about this otherwise silly similarity put us immediately at ease. As she continued to speak openly and emphatically about her new life in the Bay Area and her musical ambitions, I became aware that I was in the midst of someone very special.

Interpretive Belly Dancer Frederique “The Lady Fred” Johnston

By TCTV Founder Rosalyn Fay

Filming my “belly dance” teacher, Frederique “The Lady Fred” Johnston was a long standing desire of mine having taken her classes for nearly 4 years. Frederique is a very interesting woman! One rarely gets the chance to see so many different aspects of someone’s personality at a time. One minute Frederique is very articulately describing a dance move, and the next she is breaking into hysterical laughter at an unintended pun she made or funny thought she had (upon which she’ll often pause class to tell a story).   Read more…

Poi Spinner and Fire Dancing Artist Isa “GlitterGirl” Isaacs

By TCTV Founder Rosalyn Fay

Meeting Isa “GlitterGirl” Isaacs came out of a rather serendipitous event. I was sitting at a cafe waiting to go into a yoga class nearby when a guy approached me and asked if he could join me. Assuming I was being hit on and slightly annoyed (yet also a little intrigued by his courageous move), I hesitantly agreed. After a while of surprisingly interesting conversation, I explained how I was looking for inspiring women to feature on my website. He immediately said “I know someone who would be perfect for you.” He was right. I’ve been in awe of Isa Isaacs since first looking over her website. By the time I finally got an interview with her, I was giddy. Let’s just say, it was so good, I decided to create a two-part series. Read more…
